Ion exchange resin is a chemical used to remove hardness from water, mainly through cation exchange. Its working principle is to use the active groups in the resin to reversibly exchange ions with cations such as calcium and magnesium in the water, thereby replacing these cations from the water and softening the water.

Ion exchange resins are usually composed of polymers with charge sites, which can reversibly exchange ions with cations and anions in water to achieve the purpose of removing ionic pollutants. In practical applications, commonly used cation exchange resins include strong acid cation resins and weak acid cation resins. For example, Comcess™ 001*7 resin is a high-performance weak acid cation exchange resin suitable for industrial water desalination, softening and dealkalization applications. It can also remove all hardness in high-salinity water and can be used in combination with strong acid cation exchange resins to improve desalination efficiency and cycle water production.

In addition, the ion exchange resin system can also replace various anions and cations in the water through anion and cation exchange resins to form different treatment processes, such as ion exchange cation bed system, anion bed system and mixed bed system. This system is widely used to produce ultrapure water or high-purity water after water treatment processes such as reverse osmosis.

In the specific operation process, when the raw water flows through the column equipped with ion exchange resin, the cations such as calcium and magnesium in the water will undergo a replacement reaction with the hydrogen ions (H+) on the resin to soften the water.

When the exchangeable sodium ions in the resin reach the limit, the resin needs to be regenerated with sodium chloride solution to restore its sodium ion form and continue to use it.

In short, ion exchange resin has a significant effect in removing hardness from water through its unique structure and functional groups, and is one of the indispensable and important materials in modern water treatment technology.
