Ion exchange resins play an important role in the modern sugar industry. Many sugar factories in the world manufacture refined sugar and high-grade edible syrup, and most of them use ion exchange resin to decolorize and purify the sugar liquid.

Many sugar factories in the world manufacture refined sugar and high-grade edible syrup, and most of them use ion exchange resin to decolorize and purify the sugar liquid. Compared with the traditional method, the decolorization process based on ion exchange is more in line with the current food safety requirements, and can reduce the process cost for enterprises.
Macroporous strong base anion resins in ion exchange resins are the best choice for color removal, as color bodies interact through ionic and hydrophobic binding to the beads. Acrylic resins can remove high concentrations of color syrup. The alkenoic acid groups are only moderately selective for sugarcane color components, allowing adsorption to effectively remove color during regeneration, resulting in minimal long-term contamination. The best selection of colored syrups at the lowest price of styrene resin. The styrene backbone provides high selectivity for sucrose color components, enabling very efficient color removal and lower final color than can be achieved with acrylic resins.
